It is a bile acid, and that IS the mechanism
TUDCA is a hydrophilic (water-loving) bile acid. Oral 17-alpha-alkylated steroids cause cholestasis, bile backs up and injures liver cells. TUDCA is strongly choleretic and counteracts cholestasis (it improves bile flow), acts as a chemical chaperone and reduces endoplasmic-reticulum stress, which is exactly why it targets the cholestatic pattern of oral-steroid liver strain rather than being a generic "detox".
It does NOT make orals safe
TUDCA can lower liver enzymes and protect bile flow, but it does not neutralise the dose/duration risk of a 17aa oral, and it does little for the lipid crash and blood-pressure rise that orals also cause. Sane dosing, limited duration and bloodwork are the real protection. TUDCA is an adjunct, not a license.
Pairs logically with NAC
TUDCA works on bile flow; N-acetylcysteine (NAC) replenishes hepatic glutathione, the liver's main antioxidant defence. Different mechanisms, commonly stacked through the oral portion of a cycle for broader hepatoprotection.
Only worth running with hepatotoxic compounds
There is little point taking TUDCA on an injectable-only cycle. Run it through the oral (17aa) portion and for ~2-4 weeks after. It is a taurine conjugate of UDCA (the FDA-approved bile acid used for primary biliary cholangitis), sold as a supplement in the USA.

Use during and for 2-4 weeks after hepatotoxic oral cycles. 500mg/day (250mg x2) is the standard supplement-label dose; community protocols during harsh 17aa orals commonly push to 750-1000mg/day split 2-3x. For reference, a human clinical trial safely used up to 1,750mg/day for 4 weeks (Kars et al. 2010, unrelated indication), suggesting a wide safety margin above typical bodybuilding doses.
Not well characterized in humans: TUDCA is a bile acid that undergoes enterohepatic recirculation rather than classic drug clearance.
