Resveratrol

Why this rating?
Resveratrol is a naturally occurring plant polyphenol (found in grapes, red wine, Japanese knotweed) taken as a longevity/antioxidant supplement. It activates sirtuins and AMPK and scavenges free radicals but does not build muscle, alter hormones, or enhance athletic performance, if anything, megadosing it around training may slightly blunt adaptations. Not WADA prohibited. Rated 1 as a dietary-supplement-tier antioxidant with no performance-enhancing effect.
Overview
A stilbene polyphenol best known as a longevity and cardiometabolic supplement and a sirtuin (SIRT1) activator. Frequently stacked with NAD+ precursors on the theory that NAD+ fuels the sirtuins resveratrol activates. Its most important practical caveat for lifters is that it is a strong antioxidant, which is exactly why it can be a double-edged sword around training.
Important Warnings
- •Antioxidant vs. muscle tradeoff: as a strong antioxidant, megadosing resveratrol around training can blunt the exercise-induced ROS signaling that drives adaptation. A controlled trial (Gliemann/Olesen 2013) found 250mg/day blunted training-induced cardiovascular improvements in older men. If the goal is muscle/endurance gains, avoid megadosing it near workouts.
- •The effect is real but not universal or settled. It is dose-dependent, strongest in older adults and for endurance/mitochondrial endpoints, and was contested in the literature. Dietary-level intake is not implicated.
- •If using resveratrol specifically FOR its longevity/antioxidant effect, that is defensible, just recognize the potential tradeoff with peak training adaptation and time it away from sessions.
- •Poor oral bioavailability means much of a dose is metabolized before acting; effect sizes in humans are often modest.
Purpose & Use Cases
Longevity / Sirtuin Support
Activates SIRT1 and is commonly paired with NAD+ boosters for a "sirtuin fuel + activator" longevity stack.
Cardiometabolic Health
Studied for modest improvements in lipids, blood pressure, endothelial function, and insulin sensitivity. Results are mixed and dose-dependent.
Antioxidant
Scavenges free radicals. Useful for general antioxidant goals: but see the training caveat, since this same property can blunt exercise adaptation.

The antioxidant-vs-gains tradeoff
Because it is a strong antioxidant, megadosing resveratrol around training can blunt the exercise-induced signaling that drives adaptation (a controlled trial found it blunted training gains in older men). If your goal is muscle, keep it away from workouts; if the goal is longevity, that tradeoff may be acceptable.
Poor bioavailability
Oral resveratrol is heavily metabolized on first pass, so much of a dose never acts. Trans-resveratrol with a fat-containing meal (some add piperine) improves absorption.

Use trans-resveratrol. Bioavailability is poor. Taking it with a fat-containing meal (and some use piperine/quercetin) improves absorption. If your goal is muscle or endurance adaptation, dose it away from training (rest days or well separated from sessions) rather than right around your workout.
Terminal plasma half-life is ~9 hours (Walle et al. 2004), but resveratrol is rapidly and extensively conjugated to glucuronide/sulfate metabolites on first pass, so free/unmetabolized resveratrol levels stay very low despite ~70% oral absorption.
Side Effects
GI Upset
uncommonNausea, diarrhea, or cramping at higher doses (especially >1g/day).
Take with food; lower the dose.
Mild Estrogenic Activity
rareResveratrol is a phytoestrogen with weak estrogen-receptor activity; relevance at supplement doses is minor and context-dependent.
Generally not a practical concern at typical doses.
Antiplatelet Effect
uncommonCan inhibit platelet aggregation, adding to bleeding risk if combined with blood thinners or before surgery.
Stop before surgery; use caution with anticoagulants/other antiplatelets (fish oil, aspirin).
General Mitigation Strategies
Well tolerated at typical doses. Take with food to limit GI effects and improve absorption. Be mindful of additive bleeding risk with other antiplatelet agents. The most important "side effect" for athletes is not a toxicity but a training tradeoff (see warnings).
Post Cycle Therapy (PCT)
Not hormonal. No PCT required.
How It Works
