What an aromatase inhibitor actually does
Aromatase is the enzyme that converts testosterone into estradiol. An AI like exemestane blocks it, lowering estrogen body-wide - the tool for controlling estrogenic sides (gyno, water retention, high blood pressure) on an aromatizing cycle. It is useless for non-aromatizing compounds because there is no estrogen being produced from them to block.
Steroidal and "suicidal" - it destroys the enzyme permanently
Exemestane is a steroidal, irreversible AI. It resembles aromatase's natural substrate, so the enzyme grabs it and gets permanently disabled ("suicide inhibition") - the body must build brand-new enzyme to recover. The big practical upshot: no estrogen rebound when you stop, unlike the reversible non-steroidal AIs (anastrozole, letrozole) where estrogen springs back as the drug clears. That makes exemestane cleaner to taper off and the one AI that pairs well into PCT.
It has a mild androgenic metabolite - a genuine plus
Exemestane's metabolite 17-hydroexemestane binds the androgen receptor, which is why exemestane tends to have a better lipid profile, some bone protection, and can even nudge testosterone up (a study in young males found ~60% higher testosterone at 25mg/day after 10 days). Take it with fat - and still respect the estrogen floor

And while exemestane is less likely to crash estrogen than letrozole, it absolutely still can - low E2 means joint pain, low libido, ED, mood and lipid problems. AI vs SERM - and the one AI you can use in PCT
An AI lowers total estrogen; a SERM (tamoxifen, clomiphene) blocks the estrogen receptor and restarts the axis. For PCT you rely on a SERM - but because exemestane causes no estrogen rebound, it can be run alongside a SERM during PCT to keep estrogen in check without the springback that would blunt recovery. On its own it is not a PCT drug and will not restart the HPTA.
